1. The Taj Mahal

2. Fatehpur Sikri
Located to the west of Agra and displaying excellent craftsmanship and compositional skills, is the stunning city of Fatehpur Sikri. This was one of the first cities to be fortified, and its walls contain numerous tacit and unheard historic secrets, waiting to be unraveled and deduced. There are many different buildings within the complex, each with their own significance. The style of architecture is strongly Islamic, with hints of Gujrati and Rajasthani styles peeking in here and there. The striking red sandstone is what gives this city a fascinating hue during the sunset, and is the primary material used to build this magnificent establishment. The city came to be known as Fatehpur Sikri, the “City of Victory”, after Akbar’s triumphant Gujarat campaign in 1573. This place comprises of a stunning mosque, and three palaces, one for each of his favorite wives – one a Hindu, one a Muslim and one a Christian. The grandeur of this deserted city cannot be explained in mere words, and the rich aura can only be experienced when you set foot in this imperial metropolis.
3. The Tomb Of Salim Chishti
The Tomb of Salim Chishti is also termed as one of the most exquisite examples of Mughal architecture in India, built along with the imperial complex at Fatehpur Sikri. It preserves the burial place of the Sufi saint, Salim Chisi, who was worshipped and respected a lot by the people of his era. The main tomb building is encircled by delicate marble screens, and the tomb is located in the center of the main hall, which has a single semi-circular dome. The pedestal is ornamented with mosaics of black and yellow marble carved in geometric patterns. The door to the main chamber is intricately carved with Arabian patterns and bears inscriptions from the Quran. The carved and painted tomb chamber has a white marble floor, which is ornamented with multicolored stones. Many people believed that Salim Chishti could do wonders, and it is believed that he was the one who blessed Akbar, and soon the first of three sons was born to him.
4. The Agra Fort
Apart from these two Mughal spectacles, Agra is also home to the legendary Agra Fort, also known as the Lal Quila of Agra. Made completely of red sandstone, the enormous area it encompasses has also given it the title of an entire city in itself. The fort, when observed from above, has a semicircular shape, and its base faces the bank of the stunning river Yamuna. It is enclosed by a huge wall of red sandstone, which is about 2 kilometers in perimeter and is ornamented with graceful curves and patterns. The walls of the fort are a massive seventy feet high, making it an extremely difficult fortress to break into. What gives this fort a different and unique look is the assimilation of various traditions which can evidently be seen in the multiple buildings within this fortified complex.
5. The Tomb of Itimad-ub-Daulah
Often referred to as the ‘Baby Taj Mahal’, the tomb of Itimad-up-Daulah is a Mughal mausoleum and often regarded as a copy of the Taj Mahal. Visiting this place is like exploring the deep-rooted and rich culture of Agra. With its arched entrances and octagon-shaped towers, this spectacular monument on the banks on river Yamuna is truly a hidden gem of Agra. The exquisitely carved floral patterns, intricate marble-screen work, and inlay work are all representative of the excellence of Islamic architecture.
6. Akbar’s Tomb
Another Mughal marvel worth visiting on the outskirts of Agra is the tomb of Emperor Akbar. The exalted sandstone and marble edifice had been started by Akbar himself and had been completed by his son Jahangir. The majestic creation faces the sun and is constructed in typical style and symmetry of various monuments during the Mughal era, with a blend of Rajputana and Gothic styles of architecture. Enclosed with a large wall, the structure has four minarets like the Taj Mahal and is a sublime example of Mughal architectural beauty.
